Family Camp at Adizokan Village FAQs

‘Adizokan’ is an Ojibwe word meaning “story and spirit.” In a word, it describes how we hope families will grow during their time here! Our goal is to send families home with:

  • A sense of how each family fits into their own story and each other’s stories

  • New stories and memories to cherish as a family

  • An understanding of the special spirit within each family

  • Strong intergenerational relationships within and between families

  • Spirituality strengthened through thoughtful engagement

There are three ways to use Adizokan Village.

  • Bring a group of up to 30 people of all ages from your church or organization for a fully-programmed and all-inclusive adventure in Creation, building relationships and growing spiritually within and among families. Available for 3- or 4-night sessions.

  • Individual families can register during our ‘open enroll’ week. Contact us for more information. We would love to chat with you about how and when your family can enjoy Adizokan Village.

  • The Adizokan Village site overlooking Lake Superior is available for retreat groups May-September for family reunions and retreats of all kinds.

Family camp is priced per-person, and prices vary depending on group size. For anyone age 10 and up, a 3-night stay including food and programming ranges from $130-$160, and for anyone 9 and under, the same program is $105-$130.  Kids under 4 are free. We do have a group ‘minimum cost,’ regardless of how many attend, in order to ensure that our staffing and programmatic costs are covered. Contact Camp Amnicon for more detailed pricing information.

We are committed to serving everyone, regardless of ability to pay, with a special focus on campers from low-income or at-risk environments. Thanks to generous donors, we’re able to offer ‘campership’ funding on an ‘as-needed’ basis. We encourage groups and families to find or raise as much of their own funding as possible, and if there is financial need, we’ll cover the rest.
We often describe Adizokan Village as ‘rustic deluxe.’ The Village, built on a ridge overlooking Lake Superior, consists of five tent-cabins, each fully furnished with comfortable beds for 6, a table, chairs, and more. Each cabin has its own comfortable out-house. Shared activities occur in the picnic shelter, around the fire ring, and on the beaches and trails of Camp Amnicon. Family Camp is a wilderness experience designed to be comfortable for all! Plenty of water and battery powered lanterns are provided. There is no electricity or running water at the family camp site—an opportunity to truly disconnect from the busy world and to reconnect with each other.
Camp Amnicon provides a fully staffed, fully programmed, and all-inclusive semi-rustic wilderness experience. Meals, lodging, fun, learning, and a Bible study (or an optional secular theme study) are all included. Each element of the program has been crafted to fit the needs of inter-generational groups based on group feedback and 50 years of wilderness programming. If you’d like to provide your own meals, programming, or activities, consider a retreat at Adizokan Village.
We define family however you define family. We welcome grandmas with their grandkids, aunts with their nieces, single parent households, same-sex couples, and any other arrangement that means ‘family’ to you. Family Camp is designed to be comfortable and fun for all ages, from infancy to vibrant old age. A few specifics: we do not offer programming for kids under 3; we do require a family ratio of one adult for every three children; and while we make every effort to be an accessible site, it is highly recommended that attendees be able to traverse somewhat uneven terrain for about a half mile.
Amnicon’s Bible study is designed to engage all learning types, ages, and areas of the brain with community experiences, creative expression, and open-ended discussion. The Bible study is spread throughout the day to accommodate short attention spans and to incorporate spiritual growth into our whole lives. Both kids and adults tell us that they appreciate being challenged to engage seriously in their faith. For non-religious groups, we offer a secular study that uses the same model to build character and community.
Our programmed groups usually run 3 or 4 nights, though we’re happy to make special arrangements. Rental groups can stay as long as they like!
Camp Amnicon offers exciting canoeing and backpacking trips for youth, adult, and intergenerational groups, and retreats for groups and individuals all year round. We’d love to help you with any retreat or youth ministry needs you have, too!
