Rostered Guide

Position Description

Rostered Guides are individuals who would prefer to be available to lead programs at Amnicon now and then, rather than living on site for several months during a typical seasonal position. Rostered Guides choose their own schedules and live off-site throughout the year, unless actively leading a program through Amnicon’s base camp. Rostered Guides must have a full season of guiding experience with Amnicon, or comparable wilderness experience. Rostered Guides also maintain current certifications in Wilderness Water Safety, Wilderness First Aid, and CPR, and must participate in one training trip with Amnicon each year. Amnicon is widening its training trip and certification program options, and there will be at least 5 trips throughout the year that will meet the “training trip” requirement for Rostered Guides, and an additional training weekend in the spring to gain all required certifications in just three (jam-packed) days.

If you are interested in Rostered Guiding, please contact Brad at brad.damon@amnicon.org to find out how to get on Amnicon’s guiding roster.

Qualifications

  • Have completed a full summer season as a Wilderness Guide at Amnicon or have comparable wilderness and leadership experience
  • Fully certified in Wilderness First Aid or higher, Wilderness Water Safety, and CPR
  • Complete at least one Amnicon trip within the last three years. This can be one of the summer staff training trips, or a trip with campers.
  • Emotionally prepared for hard work in the service of others
  • Organized and self-motivated; able to work without direct supervision or specific daily direction
  • A flexible thinker with demonstrated problem-solving ability
  • Able to collaborate and work constructively with others to accomplish short- and long-term objectives
  • You do NOT need to identify as Christian to work at Amnicon, however, you must be willing to engage in and lead faith-based activities with your campers and with the staff community, an intentionally Christian community focused on compassion and service
  • Able to sustain physical activity for several hours at a time for multiple days in a row (i.e. paddling, hiking, lifting, etc.)
  • Excited about working with youth and having a positive impact on their lives
  • Enthusiastic about living and working in the outdoors.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a monthly phone call throughout the year to check in, update availability, and opt into trips and programs you would like to lead
  • Be prepared to lead a variety of wilderness trips and other programs, including Montreal canoeing, flat-water and white-water canoeing, day trips in the Twin Cities, and hosting groups on Amnicon’s site
  • Lead and teach wilderness skills, including canoeing, outdoor cooking, and Leave No Trace camping techniques with groups for whom you are responsible
  • Lead open and guided group discussions centered around Bible study, devotions, environmental education, and care for Creation
  • Take responsibility, with a co-guide, for the health, safety, and well-being of small groups of teenage campers and adults
  • Act as an encouraging Christ-like role model of compassion for others and care for Creation

Compensation

to teach and guide other people to experience peace as well.

It’s one of the best summer jobs I can imagine.” Nate (Wilderness Guide)
